Unable to complete upgrade process

I am reinstalling Vista Home Premium.
I am using my upgrade DVD to perform a clean install. I have the PC up and
running, its currently on the 30 day trial, with no system conflicts or
uknown devices.
When I run the DVD from within Windows and do the upgrade... I enter my PID
and select Upgrade. After about an hour this message pops up, I have tried
the upgrade twice with the same error.

"Windows could not configure one or more system components. To install
Windows, restart the computer and then restart the installation."

The only programs on the PC are Office 2007 Pro, JAVA, Shockwave,
Flashplayer, Real Media Player, Quicktime, iTunes, AI RoboForm, DivX and, HP
Printer software.

The only device connected to the PC is an HP Deskjet F4140.

I have partitioned the drive so I now have Crive and Zrive.
I have installed everything that the Windows Update listed to install.

Any help would be greatly appreciated?

uninstall all applications in the OS, so that windows is "fresh" and
"clean", then run the setup of the upgrade vista again.

If you have a full DVD and not a "upgrade" titled disc I would even suggest
to boot the PC with it, format the desired partition from within Vistas
setup and install it ( because then there can't be anything on the drive
that would be incompatible.

Tragically Microsoft has removed the option to boot and "clean install" with
an Upgrade only disc. With XP and prior discs that was possible.

Hi J,

If you follow the instructions in my post 'Clean Install Windows Vista Using
Upgrade Media' in the newsgroup 'Windows Vista Installation and Setup',
(dated 9/21/2007), you should be able to solve your problem. In short, to
successfully complete this procedure, it is best not to have any other
programs installed before you have carried out the 2nd installation as
detailed in my instructions. Also, make sure that you have no peripherals
other than mouse, keyboard and monitor connected and that you have
disconnected from the Internet during this procedure. You can reconnect the
other items and go back on line once you have finished the upgrade.
