HI all,if you can help. I have a new laptop Dell xps 1330 with Vista home. I
have in the past used a HP Ipaq 2200 with MS windows Mobile version 5.0 for
some time previously with XP.
Now however I am dismayed trying to get it to connect with vista.
I have been trying for a few days useing infoe supplied in many user groups.
but still end up with the same problems.

It shows up as device working properly under HP USB Sync
in Mobile Devices
in Device Manager

Does not appear in
Widows Mobility Center

In Windows Mobile Device Center

message shows "waiting to connect"

When doing a uninstall and reinstall

Installing
Message "Device has been successfully installed"
Unidentified Device Searching for preconfigured driver
folders

I have had windows firewall disabled and also am using Norton 360 wich is
also selected disabled, but still no luck. Any ideas
As said have tried countless times some of you have been lucky

I have the identical problem with a Palm Treo 750 running Win Mobile 6.1
and an HP Pavilion notebook running Vista x64 with SP1 installed.

I have tried everything known to mankind including installing and
uninstalling every driver, component, service, that could have anytjing
to do with the device - all to no avail. It worked fine about three
weeks ago and then just stopped due to no discernable change to my
machine.

I susoect this is a far more widesprad issue but we are each told by
vendors that we are theonly known person on the planetrto have the
problem. If it were not for forums like this we might believe them!

So c'mon Microsoft, Palm, HP - I don't know where the fault lies but
I'm sick to death of being passed to and fro and back agian whenever I
ring for support on this issue!

I am pulling my hair out!! ...cause whenI first got the phone it DI
recognize, it DID show visible in WMDC.....and 2 months later I connec
and NOTHING. Unistalled, reinstalled, everytyhing. I google this an
it is VERY common....but not one solution other than "one day it jus
worked..." seriously, I have seen that twice in two differnent forums

So.....did you find the answer??

Much thansk!!!!!

Sorry - best I've been able to do is to use the following steps t
minimise the problem

Disconnect phone from cradle/USB cable and switch Outlook to Work Offlin
before closing it down, and before hibernating or sleeping my laptop

After resuming, bring back Outlook (and sync with Exchange if applicable
before re-connecting phone

Even with these steps, I find that periodically (once every couple o
weeks) the phone will become 'invisible' to Windows Mobile Device Center.
When that happens, I delete the phone from Device Manager, as well as th
'Unknown Device' in the USB device list, and then re-connect the USB cabl
and phone and let Vista re-install everything

Despote all these hassles, which as you say appear to be shared amongs
many people all over the world, Microsoft appears determoned not t
recognise our problem and to do nothing about it, which I find infuriatin

For me, I ave wireless sync service with my data package via Verizon.
HOWEVER....I bought the phone so when I am not in wi-fi range (need it
for work) I can use my phone as a tethered modem. I mean, thats why I
spend the money on it!

So, the most hair pulling crazy thing is .... the phone tethered and
worked the first time they walked me through it! Then I started having
the computer sometimes not recocnize the phone when I was trying to pull
pictures off it. Then comes the issue now, where I can even get it
recognised by my computer, I mean as we have stated, not just recognized
but to recognise the device.

So I am stuck with a TWO YEAR CONTRACT with a phone and data
plan....and it doesnt work.

As I type, the damb computer keeps pining "connetec"..."disconectedc"
Its like it keeps cyclying trhough some usb check and see's something,
but changes its mind. ITs not the chord, its not the phone -- as I have
had Verizon replace both. Its not loose usb port, as I too have tried
disconecting any periphrials and trying all my usb ports.

So to ANYONE who stumbles on this post...PLEEASE...take the time to
email me ANY news ------

CLARIFICATION TO RELATED POSTS: ...I am now loosing faith  an
trying to see if, on a more global level, there is a work around t
simply NOT have to use WMDC period!...successfully of course. I mea
:sarc: WMDC can be uninstalled seperately, so that leads me to think w
could find something DIFFERENT to use, right?? I would pay money fo
such a program!!

If anyone surfing the net has an answer, and you dont want to create
login and post here (you should, its a great site) please send RELIVEN
information to me directly:

((maybe the moderator could post this thread (viewed 500+ time
already) as a sticky to the home page?? This is HUGE problem and NO ON
has found an answer. A little help would be nice)

Try allowing/enabling `ActiveSync` as an exception in your fire-wall if you
use one and it(the fire-wall) is enabled.

ALL RIGHT!! I was angry, sad, and completely fed up....but I may have
found it!

1- I did NOT get rid of the message bubble that sates Message "Device
has been successfully installed" followed by "Unidentified Device.
Searching for preconfigured driver folders..." (or nearly that).
Therefor, I am not confident WMDC is reliable....just wanted to clarify,
as this is one of the syptoms in this thread.

2- This may be it for some (was not my problem): I found that Windows
Live One care does NOT work together with WMDC. I did find a work around
here: 'the::unwired - HOW TO: Sync Windows Mobile with Windows Vista and
Windows Live OneCare' (http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3597)

(please note that in my experience the Windows Defender, seperate but
symbiotically tied to Live One care, is evil for various anoying
reasons. Windows Defender was a beta program and precursor to Live One
Care. If you ever get rid of One Care (which I did) you need to
seperately get rid of windows defender.)

3- HERE IS THE GOOD PART! Ok, so the Microsoft site "highly recomends"
proper conection of PDA device prio to and durning WMDC...we touched on
that....however, I think it may be required...heres why:

4- PDA's have a new "advanced conectivity" setting, which seems to be a
live protacol parsing information while connected. THIS NEEDS TO BE OFF
TO USE WMDC!!
A. The level 3 tech with Verizon didnt even know this, but you
should be able to talk to you manufacure tech to find the setting and
disable it.
B. Uninstall WMDC and WMDC Udate from control pannel, need to
restart to take effect.
C. Make sure your phone/pda is NOT set to hbernate when not touched
(my i760 by samsung would NOT comunicate unless in fully active mode.
Disabling hybernation (a power save feature) elivated problem.
D. Install WMDC after above changes made. THIS TIME...WMDC actually
DID open automatically, however I almost quit because it took 5 minutes
to load (no exageration). When it did it had a couple new (but standard)
first time run options, like seting up my i760 partnership profile!

So as as the partnership/initial set up happend, the device center
automatically connected to the internet and found/updated my Samsung
i760 driver (now I know what your thinking, but the samsung driver WAS
the most up to date according to the Verizon link. Should have known not
to trust them). Necassary or not, the fact that WMDC actually function
properly and as advertised was a big indication things were progressing
on the right path. Now when that was updated...

So for any who want to go a step further (past just sync and file
browsing via WMDC) Here is how I finished and set up my tethered modem:
I made the setting change on the PDA to act as a modem, must be manually
done with my i760, and then I manually had to make a dial up connection
(vs. using the verizion auto dialer program called VZ Access Manager, as
it still would NOT pass step one modem via cable comunication test in
that program). Almost arkaic to set up a manual dial up network profile,
but it is simple and for PDA modems, they are dail up connections.

So please, if anyone still has a problem, continue to post solutions
and the site admin said he will sticky this thread if there is a good
soluition.

Question is, did I find the root cause for most???....Please chime in!
