I have WLM installed on my laptop with Win 7 and have 3 email accounts that I
use 1 n earthlink and 2 on my local ISP. I receive email from all 3 (using
POP3) but am unable to connect to the SMTP servers to send on any of the
accounts. I get the following error:

The connection to the server has failed.

Subject 'test'
Server: 'smtp.skyvalleynetwork.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): No
Socket Error: 10060

Only the server will be different for my earthlink account. Any idea what
is wrong. I have verified the server and authentication settings several
times. The same setup work fine on my Win 7 tower using Outlook.

Fyi...I use a different port for Earthlink(587) and my server is smtpauth.earthlink.net

Can you logon here ?
http://www.skyvalleynetwork.com/webmail

Is authentication disabled on the account in WLM ?
Based on this info, some other things would appear to be different than how an earthlink account is configured.
<qp>
Email settings are:

Incoming
POP3 Account:
Username: youremail+sv-mail.com (A "+" INSTEAD OF THE "@" !!!)
Password: your password (THIS IS CASE SENSITIVE!!!)
POP3 Server: mail.sv-mail.com
POP3 Port: 110

Outgoing
SMTP Account: NONE
SMTP Server: smtp.skyvalleynetwork.com
SMTP Port: 25
(MAKE SURE AUTHENTICATION FOR OUTGOING SERVER IS TURNED OFF, NO USERNAME OR PASSWORD IS NEEDED FOR THIS SERVER!!!!)
</qp>

Looks like you are running into a port 25 block. As a general rule, the
owner of the SMTP server you are using must be the same as the entity
providing your Internet connection at that moment. For more on this issue
see http://www.postcastserver.com/help/P..._Blocking.aspx

The available workarounds are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your mail providers if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. If you always use the same Internet connection, substitute the SMTP
server belonging to your connection. Use that SMTP server for all of your
accounts.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, set it up in Windows Mail, and use that for
your sending chores. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked
like port 25 is. Instead of Gmail, you can also use the SMTP server of any
of your other mail providers, as long as they offer a port other than 25.

Thanks Winston and Gary. I think that cleared up my problem. I got my
earthlink account to to connect to smtpauth server by changing the port to
587. For my skyvalley account I have been using webmail access. I was just
trying to figure out how to get my Windows live client to work while
traveling. maybe it's time to get a gmail account.

regards,

Tom

I think I have made this comment elsewhere, but there's a nice discussion of this issue, and it includes some workarounds for those who don't want to use webmail for travel, at a blog that you can find by searching on "Shaw, Telus SMTP servers: how to send e-mail when port 25 is blocked" (I can't insert the link. Sorry). It deals with two Canadian ISPs, but the tips are applicable everywhere.

You're very welcome.
If you set up a Gmail account in Windows Live Mail, you will be
able to use it anywhere for sending.

Tom,
You're welcome,

You should be alright(in most scenarios) with Port 587 for both Earthlink and Hotmail while travelling. Though Hotmail unlike
Earthlink requires SSL for port 587 and authentication for the SMTP Outgoing server when using Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail
or Windows Mail, and Outlook 2003. If using Outlook 2007, then one must also choose SMPT authentication and more importantly select
TLS or Auto instead of SSL.
