Hello,

When trying to connect to the windows update site I get these messages:

Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.
To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet
Explorer 5 or later.
To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the
Internet Explorer Downloads website.

I'm running IE version: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_qdr.050301-1519.
IE itself doesn't have any problems.
I already unstalled/reinstalled IE by Add/Remove Window components. This
doen't
work.
Reinstalling a new version of IE says there is a newer version installed and
stops

Anybody knows what's wrong?

Kind regards

Close any 3rd party programs, such as popup blockers or anonymizers, that may be running on your system.
Something is hiding the identity of your IE browser.

In Internet Explorer browser > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.

Click (to clear) "Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone" to **clear** (un-check) the selection.
(A check mark, if present, on this item needs to be Removed.)

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://update.microsoft.com

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

http://download.windowsupdate.com

Click OK.

- - - -
Make sure you are not *disabling* any scripting capabilities in I.E.

Recheck ActiveX acceptance. Instead of disable, try using "prompt".

You need to be sure to delete your temp internet cache files on a regular & consistent basis.
I.E. Tools>Internet Options >Advanced --scroll list.
Advanced Tab>>Security sub-section:
"Enable" (click on to activate or tick) "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed".

Apply changes to I.E. & exit out of it. Retry Windows Update from main Windows start menus.

Be acutely aware of all the other running (open) programs on your pc.
Be acutely aware of all your startup programs. Some of those could likely cause a conflict.
Be sure NOT to be user programs like TweakMaster. Be certain your Hosts file has no specific I.P. address
for microsoft.com in it.
Be sure your firewall has granted full access permissions to Internet Explorer.

If you are running Norton Internet Security, speak up ....you may need to tweak its settings.

If you have Norton Personal Firewall / Norton Internet Security or Sygate Personal Firewall , insure they allow
showing a valid User Agent string for the Internet Explorer browser.

Copy following line, paste it into your IE browser, and tap Enter.

javascript:navigator.userAgent

This should display something similar to this:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; Q312461; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)

Maurice,

If the problem is in the firewall he needs something to show him
also what it is doing to the User-Agent header:

Try this link instead

Greetings Robert,

Thanks for the follow-up. I was pondering that issue after my last post. And was unable to recall a reference. Thank you.

I have the information

From javascript:navigator.userAgent:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)

From http://www.fiddlertool.com/useragent.aspx:

Your browser sent the following headers:

Connection=Keep-Alive
Accept=image/gif, image/x-xbitmap, image/jpeg, image/pjpeg,
application/x-shockwave-flash, application/vnd.ms-excel,
application/vnd.ms-powerpoint, application/msword, */*
Accept-Encoding=gzip, deflate
Accept-Language=en-us,nl;q=0.5
Host=www.fiddlertool.com
User-Agent=Mozilla/4.0

ASPNET's HTTPBrowserCapabilities object reports that based on the
User-Agent, your Browser has the following capabilities:

Type = Netscape4
Name = Netscape
Version = 4.0
Major Version = 4
Minor Version = 0
Platform = Unknown
Is Beta = False
Is Crawler = False
Is AOL = False
Is Win16 = False
Is Win32 = False
Supports Frames = True
Supports Tables = True
Supports Cookies = True
Supports VBScript = False
Supports JavaScript = True
Supports Java Applets = True
Supports ActiveX Controls = False

Where does Netscape 4.0 comming from??? I never installed Netscape

Ruud,

It appears there's a number of things not being detected properly, or definitely needing your attention.
Your Platform is not being detected properly. Your Windows is not being identified properly.
One of the things likely causing that is that apparently ActiveX Controls are not enabled, OR, going back to your browser, it is being mis-identified as Netscape4 (which cannot support ActiveX & thus a show-stopper at W U).

With IE6 at SP2 & XP-SP2 (using IE) --- the results should read as follows:
ASPNET's HTTPBrowserCapabilities object reports that based on the User-Agent, your Browser has the following capabilities:

Type = IE6
Name = IE
Version = 6.0
Major Version = 6
Minor Version = 0
Platform = WinXP
Is Beta = False
Is Crawler = False
Is AOL = False
Is Win16 = False
Is Win32 = True
Supports Frames = True
Supports Tables = True
Supports Cookies = True
Supports VBScript = True
Supports JavaScript = True
Supports Java Applets = True
Supports ActiveX Controls = True
SecEnhanced.

Ruud: Are you running a firewall program? If so, which & did you add Windows Update site onto its "approved" list of sites?
Are you running an AV program? which one?

Do you see Set Program Access and Defaults on your menus? Check it out. See that Internet Explorer is the default browser.

Give this a try. It may be that the DLL files for Internet Explorer browser need to be re-registered in the registry.
What follows is a batch file to assist you to do that.

1. From start menu's Run option, open "wordpad"
2. Copy the text lines in between the asterisks & space lines (below) and paste into "wordpad"
3. Save the "wordpad" file as "MyIE.bat" to your desktop and then "double click" to launch it. It should run in a Command prompt window.
