Have W98SE. Tried to connect to Windows Update...received response :
Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.
This site is designed to work with Microsoft Windows systems only.

Was originally having problem with MSXML3.DLL

Thanks

This is a known issue that's currently being investigated. In the meantime,
a number of users have reported that clearing the browser cache causes
Windows Update to operate correctly again, at least temporarily.

(Obligatory disclaimer: Windows 98 SE has reached the end of its lifecycle,
and no new updates are being provided, including security updates. Users are
strongly encouraged to update to a more recent Windows version.)

I was getting this type of screen with additional directions to go to
the MAC site for MAC operating systems. After clearing the browser
cache, the 'real' update page begins to load, then I get Iexplorer
caused an error in MSHTML.DLL, Iexplorer will close. So I still can't
get to Windows Update because of this, how do I fix that error?

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318153 Is not working for me and
so I have no way of downloading IE6 SP1 from the Microsoft site. The
access violations even extend to deleting or overwriting MSHTML.DLL
with another version unless I am in Safe Mode. I tried 3 versions:

6.0.2800.1106 (extracted from CAB as per KB 318153)
6.0.2800.1170 (downloaded from a link in your geek URL above)
6.0.2800.1555 (version I found in \SYSTEM when these errors started)

Because of the access violations, even when IE6 is not open, the only
way I can swap one version for another or even view the Properties of
each version is in Safe Mode, and all of them prevent me from going to
either Windows Update, or the Microsoft Download Site for downloading
and re-installing IE6 SP1. Do you have any other ideas for
re-installing IE6 SP1 other than getting a CD disk of it from
somewhere?

I used my broken IE6 to download Firefox, then used Firefox to
download IE6 SP1; uninstalled Firefox and re-installed IE6 SP1.

Windows Update is still the goofy 'Thank You...for Macintosh' screen.

I don't know how this will end.

Hi Brian, I haven't been able to find out much about W98SE IE problems as
most of the links I've found are dead now.
The only suggestions I can make are:
1. Post to the IE Newsgroup
http://tinyurl.com/34vukg
2. Check for malware/viruses
3. Get someone to download what you need from
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/

So back to "this is a known issue".
Not much help though.
Did you clear your TIF and try the update site again?
Did you know that FF also has an IE extension which works on sites that only
use IE?
Sorry none of this is really of any assistance, but hopefully the problem
will be rectified in the near future.

Thanks for the tip...clearing the cache seemed to work (for now anyway).
