Unable to Delete File

I have a file on my desktop that I am unable to delete.
Every time I do so, it brings up a window saying 'Need permission to
continue'.
This is followed by a UAC window asking for Administrator permission.
Answer 'OK' to both.
Then window pops up saying 'You need permission to perform this action.
Retry?'
Answer 'Yes'.
Repeat.
Repeat.
Repeat.
Give up.

Try to take ownership of it first, then delete it. You can find

On your Desktop, right-click on the file, and choose Properties. Go to the
Security tab. Click on the Advanced button. Click on the Owner tab. Click
on the Edit button. Change the owner to You (You-PC\You), or whatever your
user name is. Apply, OK. Then Apply, OK again.

Back on the regular Security tab, click on the Edit Button. Select You
(You-PC\You), and put a checkmark next to Full Control, under the Allow
column. If there are any checkmarks under Deny, clear them. Apply, OK. Then
Apply, OK again to close Properties. Now try to delete the
file...

under all the settings you refer to.

Your welcome. What kind of file is it? That is, what is its extension?
Can you give the name of the file? Can you move the file, say, into a New
Folder? If you can move it, can you delete the New Folder it's in? Might
there be a program running that is using the file?

Another great Vista feature that does not work.

First turn off UAC, it is such a productivity killer that even IF it
did work it would still be a problem.

If that does not work....... google "super hidden admin", yes Vista
has one and sometimes the only way to get things deleted is too logon
on with it.

Thank you. This enabled me to delete the file without any problems.

I am not overly impressed with Vista on the whole. The items such as the
sidebar gadgets are just an irritation to me - I don't want anything taking
up real estate on my screen while I am working. Yet, everyone raves about
this.

I somewhat agree and disagree with you on the UAC. I believe this to be a
very good security feature in that if something wants to start that was not
initiated directly by me, and is instead the result of something running, I
prefer to know about it. However, the UAC is lacking a memory of Actions
such as those built into firewalls. I believe had they built such memory
(databasing the actions) into the UAC, people wouldn't mind it because the
next time they wouldn't have to click three times to do what they need to do.

At any rate, the larger a company gets, the less productive it becomes. The
best thing that could have happened to Microsoft would have been if the Feds
anti-trust stuff had broken up Microsoft into some smaller competing
companies.

I tried this, but when I get to the part where you want us to change the
owner to our name, it won't let me change the owner that is in there to our
own name - it highlights, but I can't override it to type my name.
I have a stupid trail game exe file on my desktop and it won't delete. I get
the same thing as the question above states.
