Unable to delete Windows Live Mail Contacts

I am a Windows XP user and I have been trying for a while to delete old
contacts from Windows Live Mail, but have been unable to do so. I open
contacts, select the contact or contacts I want to delete, and click Delete
in the toolbar. Selected contacts appear to be deleted, with the number of
contacts reflecting those that have been deleted. If I then close WLM and
reopen, the contacts I deleted reappear.

I get no error messages, no failures, no lockups of any kind. All looks
normal and it appears the contacts I wished to delete are gone. Where might
my contact list be getting contacts other than the primary location I see
when I open my contact list in WLM?

Have you configured WLMail to sign into a Windows Live Identity
(, , , et al) at
Microsoft? If so, then the contacts list that appears in WLMail
should be mirror of your contacts list on the central server at
Microsoft. When you amend your contacts list in WLMail, the
amendment should synchronize with the central server (and vice
versa). Your problem might occur, if you allow insufficient time
for synchronization to occur, before you close WLMail.

If WLMail is not signed into a Windows Live Identity at
Microsoft, then your computer will display a local version of the
contacts list (which is stored on the hard drive of your
computer). You will experience the same mismatch, if you amend
the local version (with WLMail signed out) and subsequently sign
in.

As I recall when I installed WLMail, it asked if I wanted to sign into a
hotmail or other account but I decided against doing so, instead only setting
up mail to pull down my regular isp mail. My actual hotmail account has none
of the addresses that are in my contact list, so I am not sure where else the
deleted contacts could be coming from. I have wondered where there is some
weird synchronization happening with our web based isp mail, but I don't
think they are coming from there.

I don't know why you have experienced this problem, if WLMail is
not signed in - and has not imported a contacts list from
elsewhere.

To check whether whether WLMail has signed into a Live (or other
identity), look towards the top right hand corner of the main
WLMail window. If you are signed in, the name of the identity
will be shown at the far right of the toolbar (beneath the top
RH corner of the window).

If you are not signed in, then you will see a "sign in" option
(in the same place).

To prevent sign in next time you run WLMail, click on Tools /
Options / Connections - and click on the box marked "Stop signing
in".

I have WLMail setup not to sign in.Above it was stated that a local
version of my contacts would show up??I have no contact list at
all, unless I sign in to WLMail.

Thanks

Now we do seem to be confused!

You said you had not signed in. However, you also said you have
no contact list at all, UNLESS YOU SIGN IN. Perhaps we should
get back to basics.

WLMail is merely a PROGRAM that resides on your local computer.
You don't sign into WLMail. On the contrary, you can USE the
program to sign into an IDENTITY. A Live IDENTITY is located on
a server "in the clouds" at Microsoft - and not on your local
computer.

WLMail includes a mail client, a newsreader, a calendar and a
contact list. Typically, you would use the program to access
emails and read newsgroups. You can also use it to maintain your
list of contacts.

When you installed WLMail for the first time, it would have
imported your existing mail accounts from Outlook Express. The
initial installation process would also have imported your
existing contact list from Outlook Express.

In one of your previous posts, you indicated that one of your
email accounts has a Hotmail address. I suspect that when you
installed WLMail on your computer, WLMail would have recognized
that account and adopted the "" address as your
default Live Identity.

That is significant because "signed in" is the default
configuration for WLMail. Based upon what you are saying, I
suspect that WLMail has signed into the Live Identity, based upon
your Hotmail email address. Then, WLMail would have
synchronised the imported contact list from Outlook Express or
Windows Mail with any contact list associated with your Hotmail
address, on the central server at Hotmail. Then, WLMail would
have displayed the combined contact list. It is important to
realise that the result is stored on the remote server - not on
your own computer.

That is a guess, but you can verify whether that is what
happened. Use a web browser to sign into your Hotmail account.
Then, compare the contact list on the webmail interface against
the signed-in version of your contact list in WLMail. They
should be identical - because every time WLMail signs into your
Live identity, the program should synchronize with the central
server and display the resulting contact list.

When you use WLMail to enter (or amend) details of a contact,
those changes will be reflected on the central server. And if
you delete a contact in WLMail, the program will delete that
contact from the remote server. Similarly, if you use a web
browser to access your Live Identity, you can make changes to
your contact list via the Internet - and those changes will be
reflected in WLMail, the next time you use the program to sign
in.

As an alternative, you can configure WL Mail to operate as a
standalone utility. When WLMail is operating as a standalone
utility (i.e. without signing into a remote identity), it
displays a different list of contacts. That version of the
contacts list resides on your own computer, so it is quite
possible for it to be empty. And any changes to the local list
will not be reflected in the signed-in version - or vice versa.

On a separate matter, it is difficult to follow a thread, if you
delete previous responses, when you respond via this newsgroup.
Please leave previous responses intact. Furthermore, top-posting
seems to be the accepted practice in Microsoft newsgroups.
Please do not mix top and bottom posting in the same thread.

If not set to sign in to Windows Live, you are operating WLM in the Default mode.
To have contacts in the Default mode one has to:
a. enter them manually
b. import them from a prior saved csv file(created by exporting the contacts in an email program supporting an export to a csv
file)
c. copying a Live ID's contacts.edb file to the Default account's hidden DBStore folder

This is not necessary true. It has been 2 years since the initial install.
I don't remember the contacts being imported. This is not the same version
that I installed, so unless you have just installed WLMail, you can't say
for sure what will happen.

If you sign in with one Live ID, there will be 3 contact folders on your
computer. The default contacts, a live ID contacts, and a shadow of the
Live ID contacts.
I signed in, then unplugged the network cable. I still have the Live ID
contacts available.
I know that it is the Live ID contacts, because it says All contacts and
Favorites. None of my default contacts categories are listed.

Before unplugging the network cable, I switched to Work Offline.
I stopped signing in (Working offline and network cable unplugged). The
default contacts opened.

I am using the current version of WLMail. One thing I have found is that I
can delete some addresses, but not all. This one has me flummoxed.
