Now we do seem to be confused!
You said you had not signed in. However, you also said you have
no contact list at all, UNLESS YOU SIGN IN. Perhaps we should
get back to basics.
WLMail is merely a PROGRAM that resides on your local computer.
You don't sign into WLMail. On the contrary, you can USE the
program to sign into an IDENTITY. A Live IDENTITY is located on
a server "in the clouds" at Microsoft - and not on your local
computer.
WLMail includes a mail client, a newsreader, a calendar and a
contact list. Typically, you would use the program to access
emails and read newsgroups. You can also use it to maintain your
list of contacts.
When you installed WLMail for the first time, it would have
imported your existing mail accounts from Outlook Express. The
initial installation process would also have imported your
existing contact list from Outlook Express.
In one of your previous posts, you indicated that one of your
email accounts has a Hotmail address. I suspect that when you
installed WLMail on your computer, WLMail would have recognized
that account and adopted the "" address as your
default Live Identity.
That is significant because "signed in" is the default
configuration for WLMail. Based upon what you are saying, I
suspect that WLMail has signed into the Live Identity, based upon
your Hotmail email address. Then, WLMail would have
synchronised the imported contact list from Outlook Express or
Windows Mail with any contact list associated with your Hotmail
address, on the central server at Hotmail. Then, WLMail would
have displayed the combined contact list. It is important to
realise that the result is stored on the remote server - not on
your own computer.
That is a guess, but you can verify whether that is what
happened. Use a web browser to sign into your Hotmail account.
Then, compare the contact list on the webmail interface against
the signed-in version of your contact list in WLMail. They
should be identical - because every time WLMail signs into your
Live identity, the program should synchronize with the central
server and display the resulting contact list.
When you use WLMail to enter (or amend) details of a contact,
those changes will be reflected on the central server. And if
you delete a contact in WLMail, the program will delete that
contact from the remote server. Similarly, if you use a web
browser to access your Live Identity, you can make changes to
your contact list via the Internet - and those changes will be
reflected in WLMail, the next time you use the program to sign
in.
As an alternative, you can configure WL Mail to operate as a
standalone utility. When WLMail is operating as a standalone
utility (i.e. without signing into a remote identity), it
displays a different list of contacts. That version of the
contacts list resides on your own computer, so it is quite
possible for it to be empty. And any changes to the local list
will not be reflected in the signed-in version - or vice versa.
On a separate matter, it is difficult to follow a thread, if you
delete previous responses, when you respond via this newsgroup.
Please leave previous responses intact. Furthermore, top-posting
seems to be the accepted practice in Microsoft newsgroups.
Please do not mix top and bottom posting in the same thread.
