Unable to delete Windows Live Mail Contacts

It’s unlikely that contacts from your Isp web based email(assuming MSN is not your isp provider)are syncing anything with WLM.

If you are not signed on to Windows Live with a Live ID in WLM then your Hotmail account is also not syncing with WLM.
- you would be operating in WLM's default account with only a locally stored contacts database
- one could delete the entire local contact database in Windows Explorer and allow WLM to rebuild on next open without a Live
ID signon, but note, that would wipe out ***all** contacts.

Did you enter the contacts manually or did you import or migrate contacts from another prior email client ?

I imported contacts from Outlook Express. How would I delete the local
contacts database? What directory is the database located in? One last bit
of info. I am unable to export contacts from WLMail as well.

One can find the name(s) of both the Live ID and Default contacts folder in this registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\Database

Note: The folder name(numerical) is accurate but the path name in the registry is not the exact path location..
e.g. in Vista
The registry shows
C:\Users\<your windows id>\Contacts\Default\
and for a Live ID
C:\Users\<your windows id>\Contacts\<your Live Id>

When in reality in Windows Explorer(not Internet Explorer; Folder options must be set to view (Protected Operating System files)
the root Contacts folder is:
Vista:
C:\Users\<windows id>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

Xp: [ the Contacts folder should be (iirc, I'm in Vista now) or similar]
C:\Documents and Settings\<windows id>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

I don't know why you can't export contacts.

You'll have to decide what's best for you and proceed with caution, at your own risk, and due backup anything important in advance.
