Unable to download and install updates

For at least 3 weeks now I have been unable to download updates from the
windows update site.

I am able to go into the custom mode and select all the updates I need to
install.

The windows update Program also doesn't seem to be able to download anything
either.

I am able to click on the "Install Updates" button
but when the "Installing Updates" window appears it appears to be frozen,
and the status stays frozen with no status bar movement and the caption
"Preparing for download" But nothing actually downloads.

If I leave it, it says the updates were unsuccessfully installed, or if I
cancel then the IE window freezes.

My firewall is not blocking windows update at all.

see info on other problems a few days earlier, updates it works!!

Try this, it worked forme:
Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the
problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:


1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-


net stop wuauserv


Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll


net start wuauserv
