Mark,
I just had a wild and crazy idea. That is, sometimes resolving USB device driver recognition issues like you seem to have can be resolved by deleting the INFCACHE.1 file, which can get corrupted with bad data and cause issues like you appear to have. The file is located at: C:\Windows\inf. There, scroll down to the INFCACHE.1 file and right click it and select delete. To do this, you will likely have to give yourself permission to delete it, because of Windows built-in Security. Just right click the file, select Properties and then click on the security tab. Let us know whether this pocedure does anything. Sometimes it does and sometimes not. -- freddy "Mark" wrote: > Freddie, > > Sorry mate, unfortunately the only driver listed is the XPS Document Writer. > > When I got to add printer it first appears as not digitally signed, but > after clicking Windows Update then appears signed. Freddy,
Thanks a million mate. You are indeed a living genius! All that you had mentioned prior to the infcache.1 file I'd tried in a round about sort of a way. Windows seemed to be going through all the correct motions, just never getting over the final hurdle. Kept coming up with this core driver package missing message, yet everything was pointing to the location of the driver file being in place. Epson didn't have a driver to download, the only one that I had on cd wasn't compatiable with Vista, so I was reliant on Windows Update and the plug and play function of Vista. At last all appears to work! I do still have the printer listed under other devices in device manager all be it with a ?mark next to it, togehter with 45 unknown devices. You say printers shouldn't display in device manager, do you recon it's likely to be a hangup of the corrupted file and should I remove them? I am tempted to leave well alone, now things appear on the up! I'm not sure how you stumbled upon deleting this file, but I'm glad you did! Thanks again for all your help, Mark. Mark,
I was wondering whether you'd check back. Sometimes a person can get a bit of insight, though it may come a little late. Concerning those unknown devices in Device manager: Yes, uninstall all of them. Even should you remove something you shouldn't, no harm will be done. Windows will put back any good devices when you reboot and leave out the bad items. That's the idea anyway. Let us know how this works out for you. People who read these posts want to know. -- freddy "Mark" wrote: > Freddy, > > Thanks a million mate. Freddy,
All uninstalled, machine rebooted, and all seems well. The printer reinstalled itself, and disappeared from Device Manager, along with the Unknown devices. If you select View>Show hidden devices from the menu, the printer is listed under Printers - where it ought to be and listed as working correctly! Once again, many thanks for your help. Mark. Mark,
Now you have taught me something. I never noticed the printer before under Show Hidden Devices. Just goes to show ya, learn something every day. Thanks. It's been quite a journey. -- freddy "Mark" wrote: > Freddy, > > All uninstalled, machine rebooted, and all seems well. > > The printer reinstalled itself, and disappeared from Device Manager, along > with the Unknown devices. Mark,
Here is a site that has a free utility (CCleaner) to help clean up your hard drive: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Download, install and run it. I always go with the default settings. Works good for me. After clean up, defrag the hard drive. -- freddy "Mark" wrote: > Freddy, > > All uninstalled, machine rebooted, and all seems well. > > The printer reinstalled itself, and disappeared from Device Manager, along > with the Unknown devices. Brilliant! This also worked for me after around 2 hours of banging my head
against the wall trying to figure out why all of the sudden my LaserJet 6L did not work with Vista Premium -- with the same mystic error message about the missing core driver package. The laptop had been unplugged from the printer, so perhaps this brought it on. Thanks! "freddy" wrote: > Mark, > > I just had a wild and crazy idea.
