Okay, let me guess - OS = Vista?

As there is very little information on Vista and no assistance from MS and no feed back
from users who have contacted MS for support, can only suggest you start free Windows
Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

I have heard that in extreme circumstances users have to reinstall Vista to get updates to
work.

The error code you have is very generic.

Thanks for the link to support - after a few tries the following worked:

1. Click on Start and in the Search box type in regedit.

2. A new program will be listed in the same window. Now right click the
regedit program and then select the option run as administrator.

3. Now go into HKLM\COMPONENTS and check if these three values exist under
the COMPONENTS key:

PendingXmldentifier
NextQueueEntryIndex
AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving

5. Providing they do exist, then delete the three above values.

6. Restart the computer, and Windows Update should now be working fine.

to Windows Update 7.0.6000.381 which failed originally and stopped all
updates being installed loaded fine, and I also picked up the missing updates
automatically.Cheers.
