unable to hear the party i am talking to

In a video conversation the other party can hear me but i cannot hear them -
sound checks are all fine and when they ring me i hear a bell but i cannot
hear anything they say - the visual connection is fine - the other party is
able to have conversations with other people - any suggestions?
