Hi-
I am unable to install ActiveSync 4.x on my computer...either from the CD
that came with my PocketPC or downloaded directly from the MS website.
Contacting my cellphone carrier is no help.

I am running Windows XP Media Center, SP2. I have attempted to install while
AV and firewalls are disabled. Phone is not connected while attempting to
install. I simply get the same error message every time "Wizard is unable to
complete installation."

I am able to install ActiveSync 3.8 so it is something specific with 4.x and
my system...

Please advise...

It's for a Cingular 8125 and it's running Windows Mobile 5.0...so I have to
use ActiveSync 4.x to be able to use the thing, unfortunately.

the only additional point I can think of is to assure that you are
logged in with admin rights for the install... have not seen any posts
with respect to media edition.

finally, the only 4.x version currently recommended is 4.2

Yep. I'm the only user on my computer so I'm set up as admin. and I can
install all kinds of other software. The CD had 4.1 so I downloaded 4.2 from
MS...but neither will install. Both give me the same error message.

I only thought it might be a media edition b/c I know that Palm desktop
isn't supported for media edition. But according to microsoft, activesync is
supposed to be fine for media edition.

It installs on a work computer running XP Pro...so...It is isolated to my
system. Cingular told me I had to call Microsoft, I was just trying to avoid
a costly phone call but it's looking like that's my only option if I want to
be able to use this thing.

There is that file...this is where my computer knowledge falls apart.

I believe one of the errors is due to the following:
it says it is missing the InstallScript engine. and it tells me to run
ISScript.msi. It then says the InstallScript engine on this machine is older
than the version required to run this setup.

and then it says "Setup cannot continue because a newer version of
ActiveSync is already installed on this PC"

which isn't true b/c there is NO version of ActiveSync installed...hence my
issue. And there is nothing in the "add/remove programs" indicating
ActiveSync or in the "program files" indicating activesync exists on this
machine.

Should I attempt to find this "ISScript.msi" program? I can send you the
entire log file if you'd like...

I think that this is what you need to have in your system in order to
install that package:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

I think that Windows Update/Microsoft Update should have offered to install
this for you a long time ago...

I'll try it. I'm religious about my updates and just checked again on Sunday
to make sure I didn't miss any and this one wasn't offered to me. Here's
hoping!

This page might provide some clues, but I'm not sure what the root problem
is:
