Managed to uninstall using System restore. However when Automatic Update
tried to install it SP2 again and got to exactly the same point with same
error message. It looks like there are some corrupted SP2 files still around?

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD
or download the full version from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Windows XP Service Pack 2 - for standalone computers as well.

Hi,

For the "Failed to install catalog files." error, deleting or renaming
the Catroot2 folder will most likely fix this problem, I have created
a batch file that does this for you.

Go to
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2

Look for fixdb.bat under "Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from
or write to the database". Download and run it.

Anyway, I suggest you use the full SP2 installer instead of
Windows Update to install SP2.

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center
(standalone "network" version, 266 MB):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a

(disregard the "intended for IT professionals and developers" part,
it can be used on a single computer as well)

If you do not have broadband at home, but you have at work or you have
friends that have it, you can download it there and burn it to a CD.

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a successful SP2 installation, take a look here:
