I imagine if you got to the point of removing the software distribution
folder you went throught these steps.
1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:
Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.
2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Open the Download folder.
Delete all contents of the Download folder.
Close the window.
3. Start the Automatic Updates service:
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

If still no joy, repeat Steps 1, 2 & 3 directly above, this time deleting
the Software Distribution folder itself.
NB: Deleting the Software Distribution folder will remove your Update
History at
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
I have helped 6 family members and office PC's that have had this problem,
and have never had to go beyond the above steps.
Found this during another Google.

Download CCleaner and Dial-ª-fix
Ccleaner -
http://www.ccleaner.com ;
Note, uncheck Yahoos toolbar during instªll.
Do the scans with all the check marks ºn.
Run the above remover in safe mode then Ccleaner on all 3
settings(windows, apps & issues) and clear anything found reboot and see if
it
still exists.
NOTE - The first time you run CCleaner's Issues scanner you'll have to keep
running it back-to-back until it finds nothing. One scenario is a registry
key may only be a reference pointing to a completely different location in
the registry and when it's removed then that reference link is also noticed
as being invalid on a subsequent scan. It's generally a good idea to keep
running the Issues scan until nothing is listed.
There is also a third-party fix which has had good results for a number of
folks here:
Dial-ª--Fix
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix ;
Run this program with all the functions activated in safe mode. --it may
look as if the scan has frozen. DAF is actually doing lots of shoveling and
shuffling, so don't interrupt it.
Please read the page and Scroll down about 2/3 of the way to Download
Dial-ª-fix
Exit Safe Mode (Reboot)
Try the updates n0w

Beyond this, I don't have any other ideas.
Hope something here works for you.
Good Luck
