I had to repair my Windows XP and it removed the service packs and updates.
When I go to the Microsoft Update website, it does not identify the need for
any service packs although I know they are not installed.
I have cleared temp internet files, etc. and rerun the update. It
identifies 18 critical files but when I try to install them the installation
fails. No other error messages appear.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

right direction? I can't get my device manager to work and that is the
error.SO updates are out of the question.Help..

Hi,

I suggest you use the full SP2 installation to get SP2 installed.

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center (standalone
"network" version, 266 MB):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a

(disregard the "intended for IT professionals and developers" part,
it can be used on a single computer as well)

If you do not have broadband at home, but you have at work or you have
friends that have it, you can download it there and burn it to a CD.

To reset the pending download you now have, clean out the Download
folder (Window Update's temporary download folder) located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

You might need to delete the DataStore folder mentioned in the link
above, as well as the Download folder.

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your Windows Update History listing (not critical).

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a successful SP2 installation, take a look here:
