When attempting to update Windows XP I received error 0xC80005F6. I
attempted to obtain online assistance from MS. They advised me to go to the
"Sevrices.msc" file and stop "Automatic Updates" and stop "Background
Intelligent". I was then told to go to the System Root and to rename the
"Software Distribution" folder "OldSD". Next, I was to go back to the
Services.msc folder and to start Automatic Updates and Background
Intelligent. I was unbable to rename the Software Distribution folder. I
continued to receive a message that the folder was being accessed by other
programs and could not be renamed. I checked to make sure that no other
programs were running. I again attempted to rename the Software Distribution
File without success.
I would like to find out what the error message means, how to address
it, and if there are steps I can take to rename the Software Distribution
folder if it has become corrupted. Thanks for any assistance.
