I am unable to install the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer
for Windows XP (KB896688). The message I get: "Problem: A problem on your
computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed." No
kidding! The suggestion it gives is that I try again or run the
Troubleshooter -- all to no avail. What could be the problem?

There is a known problem (Microsoft now says it's "known" as of this week,
although you wouldnt know this if you were working with Windows Update
department for support. The problem is related to the security patch and it
doesnt appear that word has gotten back to windows update that the patch is
causing the problem).

The problem is after Patch MS05-052 (KB896688) installs. There are
missing/incorrect keys under
HK_CLASSES_ROOT\CLASSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} in the
registry, after the patch.

There is supposed to be a fix coming out, but MS couldnt give a date.

You can temporarily fix it by adding/updating the following Reg Keys. (The
best way is to create a ".REG" file which includes the section below (between
the X's not including them).

Backup the same key from the current reg to be safe.

Load the Reg file, and you should be OK.

(If you can uninstall KB896688 that will resolve it also, but is not a good
ideas from security standpoint)

XXXXXXXXXXXXX INCLUDE EVERYTHING AFTER THIS LINE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
@="ClassMoniker"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\InprocServer32]
@="ole32.dll"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProgID]
@="clsid"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\CLSID]
@="{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

4. Windows Update Checklist:

The fix should only take you 2 minutes, if that.

Copy the 14 lines between the "XXXXXX" below and paste it into a blank
notepad document.
Save the document with a .REG extension (like Fix.reg).
Double Click the .REG file you created and answer Yes to load. (this loads
it automatically to the registry)

Thats it.

FYI: That is the fix for the MS05-52 problem. I was on the phone with
Microsoft for 4 1/2 hours straight last night. I had the problem on 3
servers that got updated with the bad patch automatically. We thought it was
a virus and I ended up wiping all 3 and reinstalling.

Back up your Registry before doing so, please.

Hey Bud ,if you get an actual solution pass it on please. I have been looking
for an answer for about 2 months now, to the same problem. I had pretty much
give up but I check back to see if there has been any help or an admission of
guilt from Microsucks.Let me know if you get any help.
thanks
