Hi,

I have been unable to get the "Cumulative Security Update for Outlook
Express 6 SP1 (KB823353)" update to install on my machine. I'm logged
in as an administrator and I'm running Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
After I click install, the update appears to install, and it says that
the update is complete; however, a few seconds later, the windows
update icon appears wanting to install the same update again. This
happens incessantly. Anyone know how to solve this issue?

Thanks,
Bruce Leggett

Download and install the update directly:

I tried downloading the update directly just before you wrote your
post. It gave me the following error: "This update requires Outlook
Express 6.0 Service Pack 1 to be installed."

I have Outlook Express 6.0 without service pack 1 installed. I'm
searching for a seperate download for service pack 1.

Shouldn't windows update provide me the prerequisites first? For
instance, it should see that Outlook Express 6.0 Service Pack 1 is not
installed and perform that update first through windows update.

Thanks for the quick response,
Bruce

I'm having the EXACT same issue! Glad to know I'm not the only one...
I thought that I had the OE SP 1 installed as I found no pending updates
before this update that won't die!

Do you have by any chance KB897715 installed? If that's true, uninstall
KB897715 (Windows 2000 Hotfix), install KB823353, decide whether you
want to install KB887797 (see
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...d-28502b3d2518)
and install KB897715 again. The installation order is essential.

Bye,

I´ve been dealing with the same problem since yesterday without any solution
till now. I made the suggestion given here and it´s worst. Now everytime i
invoke windows update i receive the message to download both KB823353 and
KB897715 and the same problem over and over again.

I also noticed in the newsgroup that this problem is affecting XP, Windows
2000 and Server 2003.

Ironically that message may be telling you that you already have
that patch applied or one which supersedes it.

If you need more help please post using the OE you are trying to patch
or post the versions you have (e.g. use OE's Help, About) for: msoe.dll
and inetcomm.dll

Alternatively to assist your own diagnosis look for file manifests in the
TechNet Security bulletins. E.g. for 823353 open
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-018.mspx
You have to expand the bullets for
[+] Security Update Information
[+] Outlook Express 6 SP1 for Windows XP,...
to see the file manifest. Notice again, that most of the most important
modules are listed in the OE Help, About display for easy comparison.
Alternatively you can use other tools such as filever (e.g. from the RK)
or msinfo32 to make that sort of information easily capturable.
