Unable to install directX 9.0c

Hi there,

I'm running Windows ME and believe that I have directx 4.09 currently
installed (as reported by dxdiag).

I have been trying to update from the MS website to directx 9.0c but after
an apparently successful install, I reboot the computer to find an error
something like "windows failed to load %1 from %2" printed almost 100 times
after a long delay of disk access.

I am also unable to create a new system restore point (have rebooted many
times to receive the same error: cannot create a reboot point at this time,
restart your computer and try again). As such, I'm concerned with monkeying
around too much with my system files.

Do you have any suggestions?
