when i try to do a windows update, it downloads the updates to my computer,
but when it tries to install them, it can't. after trying to install the
first
one, it stops, and tells me that the updates were not installed and it lists
them. this keeps happening no matter how many times i reboot.

i noticed that prior to pressing install, instead of having something like
the following

Download size (total): 19.7 MB
Estimated time at your connection speed: 3 minutes

instead i get

Install Updates Download size (total): 0 KB *
Estimated time at your connection speed: 0 minutes *
(*Downloaded; ready to install)

so apparently it already knows that the updates have been downloaded, but it
can't install them.

i would appreciate any help on how to fix this.

thanks

ray

Ignore the title - Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation

The Windows Update Temporary folder is corrupted. We can perform the
following steps to troubleshoot this issue.

NOTE: Some third party programs can also affect the Windows Update service.
If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet
or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet
connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I
recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the
Windows Update site later. Please be sure to enable them again after
completing the update process.

Clean up Windows Update temporary folder
===================================
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the open window.

Net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the open folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the open window.

Net start WuAuServ

Please note space.

After that, please visit our Windows Update website again to check the
result. If the issue occurs again, please assist me to collect Windows Update
log file for further help. For your convenience, I have included the detailed
steps.

How to collect the Windows Update log file
================================
Note: Since there are two Windows Update log files with similar names,
please be aware that I am requesting the "WindowsUpdate.log" file without a
space in the middle of the name.

1. Click on Start, Run and type "WindowsUpdate.log" (without the quotes)
2. Click on the OK button. We will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log"
3. Now click on the "File" menu and then click on the "Save As" and select
"Desktop" in the "Save in" option on the top of the window.
4. Click on the Save button. The file will be saved to your Desktop. Please
send the file.
