Unable to install driver for webcam

Hi there,

I tried to install a webcam but it was unsuccessful and Vista told me that
there was not enough storage to operate the installation. I have currently
254 Gb of free HDD space. I tried to search for the driver but Vista could
not locate it, i even tried using every USB port. I managed to install the
software required, but when i open the programme, it says that I do not have
any video capture hardware. Vista has been giving more problems than this
alone.

I had to buy a new webcam that was Vista compatible, as my old one was not.
Is yours compatible?

If you tell us which webcam, and which software you are trying to install,
maybe someone here can help.

Also, did you install the software before plugging in the webcam, as
instructed?

Will i not be able to use a webcam if it wasn't Vista compatible? My webcam
is compatible for all Windows operating system from Windows 95 onwards. The
software is USB PC Camera Installer and my webcam is from EG Accessories.

I just tried to install the software before plugging my webcam and it says

"USB PC CAMERA (SN9C120)

The system cannot find the file specified."

Vista has changed the way that applications may access it's parts - so if the
device doesn't specify that it's compatible with Vista, then you're on your
own. I'd suggest checking at the website of the webcam manufacturer for
advice about using it with Vista.

I am trying to install the driver for my Philips Webcam TouCam II PCVC 840K
on Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium. The webcam works on Windows XP and
it is connected to my PC through a USB port.

I downloaded the driver advised by Philips but, during installation, Vista
says that Windows cannot find the driver software for my device. Philips say
that a setting in my Windows may be preventing the installation.

Do I have to discard a webcam which I bought approx. 2 years ago for about
70 Pounds Sterling?

Hi Paul,

Philip's lists no Vista drivers for that model. What are they supplying you
with? An XP one? That may or may not work, what they need to do is provide
you with one for Vista. There is no "setting" preventing installation beyond
the need for an appropriate driver file.

Hi Rick,

I did point out to Philips that I expected a company of their magnitude to
be able to provide a driver for Vista but all they could come up with so far
has been an upgraded XP driver to be used as a "work around" to install my
webcam on the Vista OS.

Hi,

Try forcing the XP driver file. If it was a package download, run it to
create the temp folder that holds the extracted files. Open Device Manager,
right click the webcam (or unknown device) and use update driver. Using the
browse option, manually point it to the temp folder created bye the setup
(may take a bit to find, helps to empty temp folders first). Then select it
and try forcing it through.

Hello Rick,

I did save the downloaded file (Drivers Windows XP) in a Folder on the
Desktop and extracted it in the same folder. Then I proceeded to Device
Manager - Unknown Device - Update Driver and browsed to the said Folder. I
got a message saying "Windows was unable to install your unknown device.
Windows could not find driver software for your device. Contact the
manufacturer of the device".

I don't know if this is relevant but, during the attempted installation, I
got these messages:
Error: String NOUSB string was not found in string table.
Information: No USB String.

Hi Paul,

Basically, it means the XP driver isn't going to work. Vista is expecting a
line that doesn't exist in the file.
