This "genuine" validation tool will not install. Error msg: "Updates were
unable to be successfully installed". Web site validation runs successfully.
Disabled anti-virus - same problem.

On the WU Website, select your history of updates - now click on failed update
(red mark) and see if there is an error code.
If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the alternative, do
a search for the error code.

If you looked back a page on this newsgroup you'd see that everyone is
getting the same error message with this piece of junk. Don't ask for codes
that have already been posted - just post a fix - AND STOP MS RELEASING
RUBBISH THAT DOESN'T WORK.

Um, it worked on all three of my computers. I suspect your machine isn't
clean; you didn't disable your anti virus auto scan before installing
the update and/or you have beasties on your machine.

if you'd get off your moral high horse for a second I think you'll see that
there are plenty of users with this problem. My machine has not even had as
much as a virulent cookie stored on it for years.

Maybe MS would now like to address the problem. Though why they both with
this wga update is beyond me when the means to circumvent are so well known.

"adtilley" the problems you refer to are to do with the update installing and
then suggesting that the user has a pirated copy.

Quote - "I do have a genuine copy of XP Prof but since running the latest auto
updates
it is now saying I have a pirate copy, does anyone know how I can fix this ???"

In this particular case, the OP said the update failed to install, which is
different thing entirely. Updates may fail to install for many reasons, that is
why I requested further information.

Quote - "This "genuine" validation tool will not install. Error msg: "Updates
were
unable to be successfully installed". Web site validation runs successfully.
Disabled anti-virus - same problem."

"adtilley" if you wish to make a complaint, I suggest you contact MS directly
yourself.

Have a good evening/day.

FWIW, in my case, the failure to install is not malware related. The machine
is scrupulously clean. No rootkits, no nothing.

Antivirus being on or off is not involved. I know this because I have
performed the update installation on several PCs and they have the same AV on
them as the one that failed. And the AV was not turned off on any of them.

The WGA Notification tool IS the issue. When PCs can pass the WGADiag2.exe
Genuine XP test but fail the installation of this new tool, it's the tool,
not the PC. (FWIW, these Windows Update WGA tools are the only failed Windows
Updates I have ever had.)

No, it's the Windows Update installer that had the problem - the WGA
Notification Tool never got a chance to run, because it never got installed.

Please attach to a follow-up in this thread the contents of your file:

C:\WINDOWS\WgaNotify.log

This should give a clue as to what went wrong. Attachments are better than
pastes in-line, thanks.

This is the same problem as was caused by 82130. A workround that works for
me is to navigate to Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Downloads. You will
probably find a load of folders with strange names. You may be able to
identify the content by hovering over the icon. In any case, if you open the
folder, there will be another folder called Update. Open this. You should be
able to identify which update it is from the files in here. To install the
update, click on the .exe file.

I have no idea why this does not work automatically. I am a Genuine User, as
verified by the WGADiag2 utility. It is most annoying.

Um, it's not a matter of morality but a technical problem.

Again, did you clean up your machine first? Did you disable your anti
virus auto scan before installing the update?
