Unable to install KB923275 and KB923272

I've been unable to uninstall these two recent updates. I get the same
message and am referred to an article to to enable OSE. I'm referred to an
article that says: Office 2003 Update fails to install with error 0x80070643

The OSE service is already set to manual and it makes no difference on the
install and so this article has been of no use.

Let me know if further info is needed and any suggestions. The other
updates that came out at the same time have installed fine---these are the
only two with problems. I've rebooted and attempted install multiple
times---always the same message: Unable to install.

I am having exactly the same issue but with a wider range of updates - the
updates of Oct 11th - the XP updates installed fine but I cannot install any
of the Office Updates - OSE is as with Rusty set to Manual

Any help really appreciated

Try this and keep in mind your Windows folder may be named \WINNT or \Windows :

Housekeeping and cleanup steps if your system is Win XP or Win2000:
Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

Use Windows Explorer. Go to C:\Windows\System32

If you have a sub-folder called * Catroot2 * (not Catroot) rename the
folder to CR2OLD. Or delete everything in that folder. Just make sure you do the right one.

Then logoff and restart Windows fresh before re-trying any more updates.

Still unable to install.....
I had to go into safe mode to rename or delele the files in catroot2. Once
I was able to rename the directory---and delete all the files in the
directory---I rebooted. The result is the same. Still unable to install
these two updates. Please advise......

The problem remains!! I had to use safe mode to clear out or rename
catroot2. Once that was done---the install still kicked back with the same
error message. Please advise.....

Problem persists. Had to go into safe mode to rename or delelte catroot2.
Once done I rebooted and it still has same problem. I noticed in the new
catroot2 folder that there is a file edb.chk that contains recovered file
fragments (8kb). Is this part of the problem???

fail to install because ose service is disabled or cannot be started. Applicable
Office versions: Office 2003

If you disable the Ose.exe file, Microsoft Office updates do not install when you use
Microsoft Windows Server Update Services or the Microsoft Update Web site to deploy
software updates and hotfixes to computers in the organization

P.S. One more thing. Clear out your Internet Explorer browser's temp files, as well as Windows' temp files.
Go to Internet Explorer main menu, select Tools / Internet Options. Click on Advanced Tab.

Scroll down to the Security section. Look at "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed".
Check (tick) the box to enable it. Apply changes / press OK. Close I.E.

Get and use CCleaner (freeware) from http://www.ccleaner.com/

Download it, save it, set it up and run it.

Close all browsers before running CCleaner !

When started, select the Windows tab:

Select these options:

Under Internet Explorer: select Temporary Internet Files, Delete Index.dat files

Under System: select Empty Recycle Bin, temporary Files, memory dumps, Chkdsk file fragments

In a number of cases, deleting the IE cache has helped to clear problems.

Yes it's the same error message as before and I've been through everything I
could find on the ose related message. OSE is enabled and set to manual just
like the article asks for. I've done an ultra clean using everything you
suggest and more. Had to again go into safe mode to get rid of some of the
files. Problem persists....

Any new ideas??

I've been through the related articles on the ose related error listed. OSE
is set to manual just like the article asks. I've also done a super clean of
everything you suggest here and more. Went back into safe mode to make sure
everything was gone and the problem persists. Any new ideas????

Here's a new message that showed up in the catroot2 folder after the last
attempt:
CatalogDB: 7:20:30 PM 10/11/2006: File #2 at line #1477 encountered error
0x00000057

Also I'm still getting the edb.chk file that shows recovered file fragments
each time I try it and recreate the catroot2 folder.
