I have been following posts about this problem for a few weeks, and trying to
find a solution, but now I'm stuck ...

I had multiple failed attempts for Automatic Update to install KB927978.

It wasn't listed in the Add / Remove Programs, and neither was KB925672.

I downloaded a 'fresh' copy of KB927978 manually (from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en), and installed (with my browser closed).

However, the installation was interrupted with the following message:

Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Msxml2.DOMDocu ment.4.0\CLSID. Verify
that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support
personnel.

Following MowGreen's advice (to another user in another thread ...) I used
regedit.exe to check :

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Msxml2.DOMDocument.4.0\CLSID

and :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.DOMDocu ment.4.0\CLSID

but both show my account (the computer administrator) as having Full Control
and Read permissions.

Help!

Where do I go from here, please?

Mark

Mark,

Please show hidden files, folders, and system files -
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...l62.html#winxp

Navigate to the WINDOWS directory (folder).
Check to see if either of these folders is present -

$NtUninstallKB925672$
$NtUninstallKB927978$

Let us know if they are present, please.

Besides your User Account, *System* needs to have Full Control and Read
perms for this update to install properly.

,Well I'm confused. My problem with this KB927978 & KB925672 update is I
can't remove it in the add/remove programs. A popup appears--Another
installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before
proceeding with this install.-- I have that endless 'loop' of windows
installer preparing to install, over and over and over and over......I think
this is related to this update. In Microsofts update history it shows 1
successfull download of both these and 10 failed downloads of the same
update. Any help will be much appreciated. Annoyed and frustrated!

Ken G.,

Use the registry editor and navigate to this subkey, right click it,
choose Permissions :

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Msxml2.DOMDocument.4.0\CLSID

That's how you can tell if System has Full Control and Read perms
IF you are not sure what you are doing DO NOT do ANY editing of the
registry or you may render the system unuseable.

How to back up, edit, and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows
Server 2003

Both KB92562 and KB927978 were successfully downloaded once and 10
failed downloads of WHAT same update ?

IF you understand the registry and you know how to RESTORE a backup copy
of it, then would you please check these subkeys and tell us what the
Data is for them ?

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ins taller\InProgress

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations

Hey all,

i've been following some posts I got off the internet and havn't found a solution to my problem. My Windows update prompts me to install 1 update: MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978). It is already downloaded, and every time I install it, it says the installation is done. Then, 5 seconds later, my Windows Update prompts me to install the SAME update. It's a constant cycle! I've installed the update at least 10 times. I used some of the advice that was posted on this threat (such as checking if SYSTEM has full permission, and it does). I need to install this one update so i can pass the security test at my University Wireless Internet Access - someome please help me.
I am using Windows XP Media Centre Edition if that helps, and it is a brand new laptop i boguht a few days ago.

Thank you,

Neil.

I have exactly the same problem as the post before me - brand new Toshiba media centre laptop and this update is constantly trying to install itself. It always says the installation is complete, I have done this many times and the option to download it again is still there in the bottom right. a)why? and b) is it specific to the XP edition, also is it microsoft related?
