Unable to install Office 2003 SP3 and Outlook 2003 KB936677

Since 9/18/2007 my Windows XP SP2 computer has been trying unsucessfully to
install the 2 above updates. All previous updates have been installed
properly with no problem.

My computer came with Office XP (2002) which included Outlook, Excel, Word
and Publisher. I needed Access, so I uninstalled Access 2000 from my old
computer in 2002 and installed it along with Powerpoint 2000. In 2004 or
2005, I bought and installed a standalone Outlook 2003 to be compatable with
my laptop since I sync my files. After that install, when I open Outlook
2003 I get a flash on the screen about Windows Installer. I've lived with
that annoyance and have been able to update up to this point.

I hope there is a solution out there. My guess one solution would be to
upgrade my Office software. If I could buy Office 2003 so I would be
compatable with my other 2 PCs so be it, but if it involves me buying Office
2007 for all 3 PCs it is not in the budget.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ron,

How are you attempting to install the updates? It sounds like this is from
Automatic Update feature in Windows which is probably hiding any error
messages displayed during the update installs. Would it be possible to
download the Outlook 2003 KB936677 update and attempt to install it to see
what behavior you are seeing during install? You can download it from the
following location:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

You can also try running a repair operation of Outlook 2003 from Add/Remove
Programs. I would like to see if you get any type of error messages during a
repair operation of Outlook 2003.

Hugo,

That fixed the problem. I was able to see the error message which directed
me to setup.chm . The bottom line problem was the "Office Source Engine" was
disabled. After fixing that I was able to install the updates. Thanks again
for your help.

Hello, I can not manually install (normal or unattended/quiet mode) or
slipstream (using the msiexec installation of the MSP) this Outlook
filter hotfix KB936677. Starting the Office Source Engine does not
help. The only method that seems to work is to use Microsoft Update or
Office Update, which is unacceptable to me since my goal is to have a
completely updated office install with SP3 and any new hotfixes
already integrated - so the end result is nothing required to download
on either MU or OU.

It appears there is a version mismatch incorrectly coded into this
hotfix. When running a manual install of this hotfix (by simply
downloading and executing) on a computer with Office 2003 w/ SP3
already installed, I get an error saying "The expected version of the
product was not found on your system." When I extract the OUTLFLTR.msp
file from the hotfix package and execute that file or attempt to
integrate to an admin install source using msiexec, I get an error
saying "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer
service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the
upgrade patch may update a different version of the program."

I'm not the only one with this problem:
http://www.msfn.org/board/Latest_Out...tml&pid=694939

I do integrate SP3 in my office source beforehand in the same manner I
did SP2 previously, detailed here: http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/48/
and both MU and OU detect it as properly installed, so other than the
outlook filter hotfix, it's a "clean slate" otherwise on both
websites.

On a side note, I want to point out that Microsoft Update has never
properly detected slipstreamed office 2003 hotfixes (using msiexec to
integrate the msp file to an admin install source) whereas Office
Update always has. The only way to convince Microsoft Update is to run
unattended/quiet installs of Office 2003 hotfixes in RunOnceEx of a XP
unattended install (therefore consuming more time to finish), or to
slipstream the office hotfixes as normal, and then export the registry
of the office hotfix section of a computer updated through MU to
refrain it from telling me I need to download fixes that are already
properly integrated. Very annoying.

Oh, this is MEGA ugly, but does work:

Note: If you have stand alone Microsoft Office product (such as
Project, Publisher, FrontPage, Visio or OneNote) installed, please
first remove them from Add or Remove Programs list.

1. Quit all running programs.

2. Click Start menu-> Run, type "regedit" (without the quotation
marks) in the Open box and press Enter.

Note:
a. If you are unable to locate some registry keys, please just skip
it.
b. Please go to File | Export and backup all the registry first, this
is important! Please refer to the attachment backup.zip for more
Information.

3. Delete the following registry keys if they exist:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\904...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Com ponents

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Fea tures\904...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Pro ducts\904...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Pat ches

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Installer
\Products\904..

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Comp onents

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Feat ures\904...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Patc hes

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Prod ucts\904...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Installer
\Products\904...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall
\{00XXX409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall
\{9XXX0409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9}

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall
\{90110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}

Note: Please delete all the registry keys under the above "Uninstall"
key similar
to {00XXX409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7} or
{9XXX0409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9} or
{90110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-150048383C9}:

4. Quit Registry Editor.

5. Click Start menu-> Run, type "%Temp%" (without the quotation marks)
in the Open box and press Enter.

6. Empty the %Temp% folder.

7. Empty the Recycle Bin.

8. Restart your computer and install Office again. Then, go to Office
Product Updates Web site to check for all available updates:

Please follow the steps above, if you have any trouble performing the
troubleshooting steps,
************************************
I STRONGLY encourage deleting the temp folder and emptying the recycle
bin in safe mode, because that is what worked for me, the second
attempt.

If you are legit and have the Outlook junk filter and Office 2003 SP3
will NOT install, this actually worked for me. Personally, I went to
Microsoft Update at the very end for the upgrade online. Is it WORTH
this effort. Well, my first try I couldn't run Outlook at all and my
registry backup was corrupted.....
