Unable to install/register update files

My auto updater stopped running back in April.... just realized it. Now it
says "Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer. To continue:"

I click continue to register or install the files; and it just keeps looping
back to that same point.

Any ideas? Windows XP.

Download Dial-a-fix from http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix_beta

Use its options to repair Windows Update, Crypto, and Internet Explorer.
