If you have recently used Windows Live Safety Center Registry Clean-up, then
you need to restore the registry keys that were deleted in the clean-up.

Use control panel "Folder Options", tab "View", to enable "Show hidden files
and folders"

Close all Internet Explorer windows.

Use Windows Explorer to navigate to folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Windows Live Safety
Center\BackUp\

and double-click the .reg file previously created by the Microsoft Safety
registry cleanup.

Please report back whether this fixes your problem.

Initially and subsequently it says unable to access the registry, but it does
seem to work.

Thanks very much!

Thank you for your post! Your advice helped to clear up my update problem.
That
"Windows Live Safety Center Registry Clean-up" really did a number on my
computer. I lost the use of my paid subscription to Norton, it did something
to my video driver, and then, the "blue screen of death"...thank God for Safe
Mode. I was able to fix the other problems with video driver udpdates and
the removal of Norton System Works and the removal of Norton Internet
Security (I now use Zone Alarm). Just when I thought it was over, the Office
update problem "pops up". I did learn plenty from all of this...and one
thing is for sure, I will not be using the "Windows Live Safety Center
Registry Clean-up" any time soon. Thank you again.

You can help others avoid the same experience by posting what you have
learnt at the Windows Live Safety Center Product Feedback forum:

Thanks a lot. It worked! Why does MS do this to guys like me who depend on
their computers to do their work but are not knowledgable about the workings
of the system and keep getting caught in this kind of quicksand?
