Using Acer Aspire 3000, Windows XP SP3, Internet Explorer 8, AVG.

Did a Windows Update - selected Express installation - 20 updates returned.
Went through download and installation - results window came back advising
updates not installed. Attempted to install a single update - same results -
not installed. No error message.

Help!

On the WU Website, select your history of updates - now click on failed
updates (red mark) and see if there is an error code.
If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the
alternative, do a search for the error code.

or

How to view the Update log in Windows:-

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error
code(s) associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If
appropriate copy and paste the error codes into this thread so someone may
be able to assist you. On the other hand, you may be able to find the error
code and other suggestions by searching the Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of
update ie KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update.
This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

The error code is 0x80070005. Went on the Microsoft Help and Support website
relating to above code. One of the causes is that when installing SP3
directly from the website and not rebooting, file Wups2.dll was not
registered.

From the command line, typed net stop wuauserv and pressed Enter. Automatic
Updates service was stopped
typed regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll and pressed Enter.
Error window returned says DLLRegisterServer in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups2.dll failed. Return code was: 0x80070005

I checked the WU window - seems some of the updates were installed.

Are you logged in as an administrator?

Try doing this while booted in Safe Mode.

Harry.

Thanks Harry,
I launched my laptop in Safe mode and went into command prompt. I attempted
to stop the Automatic Updates service - it came back advising the service is
not started. I then attempted to register the wups2.dll - error message came
back saying "LoadLibrary("C:\WINDOWS\wups2.dll") failed - The specified
module could not be found"

Wrong directory? ; )

Otherwise you could use DependencyWalker to profile that regsvr32.exe
command using that operand and then trace the execution of it.
Sometimes you can get that message when the missing module
is one of the dependent modules, not the one being specified by the command.

C:\windows\system32\wups.dll as you suggested and received the 0x80070005
error code.
