Unable to install WSUS SP2 or uninstal WSUS SP1 to re-install ?

I'm trying to install WSUS SP2 on a server which already has WSUS SP1
on. When I try it fails uninstalling the previous version and I get an
error about can't find WUSSetup.msi in a temporary location.

I've pointed it at C:\Program Files\Update Services\setup\WUSSetup.msi
but the uninstall still fails.

I've also tried uninstalling WSUS completely from Control Panel
add/remove programs and that fails as well.

Anyone got any ideas about how I can get WSUS with SP1 uninstalled so I
can install WSUS with SP2 ?

Thanks

You should not be running the install/uninstall directly from the MSI;
rather, you should use the EXE wrapper that the MSI and other supporting
files are cotntained within (i.e. WSUS30-kB972455-x86.exe). If you tried to
run the MSI directly, this could be the cause of your issue -- but there
are also dozens of other possible causes... almost all of them documented in
the Release Notes. (Have you reviewed the Release Notes?)

Best scenario is to restore from the backup you made prior to initiating the
upgrade to WSUS3SP2.

Standard tools for remediating a failed installation are:

1. Rerun the WSUS3SP1 installer package (i.e. WSUSSetup_30SP1_x86.exe) and
it should kick into maintenance mode and allow you to perform an
uninstallation.

2. If that fails, then refer to thsi WSUS Support Blog posting:

I'm not running the install/uninstall from the MSI, when I run the SP2
..EXE the first thing it does is try to uninstall WSUS and tells me it
can't find WUSSetup.msi and asks me where it is, without access to the
correct version of that file nothing is able to automatically uninstall
WSUS I suspect

That didn't help, I don't think the attempted upgrade to SP2 caused the
problem, it failed because of a pre-existing problem that may have been
there ever since I installed SP1 ages ago

I've tried that and the uninstall fails as well, although with less
helpful error messages

Thanks, I think that's the only option left now

Eventually managed to uninstall it completely and re-install SP2 fresh,
as well as the instructions at:-
http://blogs.technet.com/sus/archive...l-of-wsus.aspx

I found I needed to remove the WSUS web roots and delete the WSUS
"update services" directory, which required a locked file
"EventCategories.dll" to be forcibly deleted first or the install still
failed.

All worked out OK eventually though

Thanks

Ahhh.... the WUSSetup.msi that should be in the %ProgramFiles%\Update
Services\Setup folder may be missing.

Also, make sure that the %ProgramFiles% environment variable is pointing to
the correct location.

Could well be. If the WUSSetup.msi were deleted at some time in the past
then it would also be missing from a current backup.

See if you can extract the WUSSetup.msi file from the
WSUSSetup_30SP1_x86.exe package and put it back where it goes.

Well, there's one more now that I fully understand the situation. :-)

I am having this exact same problem with the SP2 upgrade, WUSSetup.msi
is unable to uninstall WSUS with SP1 for some unexplained reason so SP2
install process fails at that point.

If I manually uninstall WSUS will I be able to recover it's database
when I reinstall? (Windows Internal, not mssql).

A missing MSI package for WSUS3SP1 will cause this to happen.

No. In fact, the WSUS3SP2 installer run as a "fresh install" will refuse to
connect to an "SP1", or even an "SP2 RC" database, since in that scenario it
can only connect to a pre-existing "SP2" database.

The WSUS3SP2 installer needs to 'update' the database schema, so the only
way to do that is by actually upgrading a functional WSUS3SP1 installation.

I would recommend this procedure:

1. Manually uninstall WSUS3SP1.
See
http://blogs.technet.com/sus/archive...l-of-wsus.aspx
for instructions. (Skip the steps related to deleting the database or the
Windows Internal Database instance.)

2. Reinstall WSUS3SP1 attaching to the existing (SP1) database.

3. Perform the WSUS3SP2 upgrade.

I'm not missing an MSI package for WSUS3SP1 though, the file is exactly
where it is looking.

Thanks for the advice, I will try it out.
