Unable to link with Yahoo users

Hi Jon,

I hope you can help clear this up for me. I work with an online gaming site
and we use Live messenger for user support. I have recently discovered that
for some reason users with yahoo email cannot link to our messenger. Testing
from my personal Live account proved that it indeed can be easily done, yet
the support account still completely ignores any form of request to or from
Yahoo addresses. The only difference I can see is that the personal account
I tested with is @hotmail.com and our gamesite support account uses the
'gamesite'.com address. Is it possible there is some form of issue with the
gamesite accounts' passport that is preventing Yahoo users linking with us?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance for
your time on this matter.

Greetings,

The Yahoo interoptability with Messenger is not a consistent usable experience. It's a shame
really because the actual implementation isn't that bad, but the reliability is just lacking.
The problems are known internally but there hasn't been much traction on it.

All the necessary glue that makes this work (when it does) happens server-side, so there
isn't anything you can really do to "fix" anything. However, to answer your question, there
is no "blocked" domains for the Yahoo interop that I know of.

If you're using user support with some Yahoo users, I'd highly recommend you just sign up for
a Yahoo account and use their client (or something that connects to Yahoo directly) instead.

Thank you very much for the speedy reply. :-)

Just to be clear I was not trying to suggest that our domain was being
blocked in any fashion. I was hoping that since hotmail accounts come with a
'preconfigured' passport, that possibly our passport configuration might be
somehow lacking or incomplete. Am I correct in my assumption that passports
are linked to Messenger functionality?

I had not yet encountered any issues personally, nor have I encountered
others having trouble using Hotmail accounts in Messenger to link with Yahoo
email users. The game site is the only non-Hotmail account I have experience
with in Messenger, so I was hopeful that I might have stumbled on the problem.

If there is little chance this is the case I shall certainly take your
advice and submit a proposal to add Yahoo messenger to our support services,
but was truly hoping to avoid this.

Thank you once again for your time spent on this matter,
NetScorpion

Hi,

The two "special" things you get on certain Live IDs is mail (ie. Hotmail) and on the
non-Hotmail IDs, you get the ability to actually change your ID to something else and have
your contacts automatically transfer. That's about it.

Is this fixed in the 9.0 beta? The product is pretty much unusable with this
issue...

Hi,

I'm not quite sure which part of this thread you mean, but how Yahoo works and how the Live
IDs work has not changed.
