Unable to load three updates

Have been trying to load three updates for a year now, which keep failing on
the following error codes:

KB890046 0x8007010B
KB896358 0x80070003
KB896422 0x80070003

Microsoft Support provided lots of advice - none of which ever worked. This
included doing a manual install. In the end they said that the only option
was to completely reinstall Windows XP. However I'm reluctant to do this,
because I'm technically challenged and this would mean reinstalling and
reconfiguring all my other programmes, which could be a nightmare!

Two questions.

1. Is there any clever way to get these updates onto my system?

2. Is it putting my system at any real risk by not having them loaded?

All advice welcome.

Yes, your PC is at risk from the exploits which those updates fix.

Not knowing what you have already tried, I might be duplicating previous
advice.

Before attempting the updates, please ensure that all third-party
anti-virus, anti-malware, download accelerators, or firewalls are disabled.
Enable Windows Firewall to replace any third-party firewall.

Please open a command prompt window, and type the command

echo %allusersprofile%

and copy back in a follow-up exactly what it says in return.

In Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder "C:\Documents and Settings" and
right-click on "All Users", select "Properties", cliick tab "Security".
Ensure that either "Users" or "Everyone" has row "Full Control" ticked in
column "Allow". If this causes a change, ensure that the change is
propagated to all child objects.

Now try the updates again. If they fail, please post those portions of the
contents of
C:\WINDOWS\KB890046.log
C:\WINDOWS\KB896358.log
C:\WINDOWS\KB896422.log
which are relevant to the most recent failure.

Thanks for helping with this. Have done the first thing, and got the
following response...

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users

Then, went to "Properties" for "All Users", but there is no "Security" tab,
and there doesn't seem to be any of the options that you mention available on
any of the tabs ("General", "Sharing", "Customize").

I'm using XP Home on a 4-year old laptop. Should this make any difference?

Good, that's correct.

The absence of the Security tab is because you are using XP Home. If you
re-boot into Safe Mode, you should find the Security tab is present during
Safe Mode.

Using Windows XP Home, so unable to access security. Tried to do this in
Safe Mode, but (despite following online instructions) am not given option to
"select the operating system" and therefore cannot press F8 to choose Safe
Mode. Can you give further advice please?
Many thanks
