unable to log off system

Pretty simple, really - all I did was try to log off my system last night,
and the system seems to have gone into a loop - screen says: "logging off",
and nothing happens - tried to shut down the computer (laptop), pulled all
the plugs and when I tried to get back on, I still get "logging off" message.

To force it off, hold the power button for about 5-6 seconds.

In addition to BigEd's post, make sure that you close all programs and
wait a moment before logging off.
