Computer is just a year old, came with Works installed. For some unknown
reason the problem began: could not open document files with Works. This
worked in the past, but suddenly I could not open these files. Any help will
be greatly appreciatedl.

Docs that you created with works? Or ones that others sent you?
Documents created in Word or Office (NOT the Works version of Word) may not
be compatible with Works. Especially if those docs were created using Word
2007 or Office 2007. Those versions have a new default format.
I'll explain more, but I'll wait for your answer first to see if this is
relevant to your issue.

Above is a link for Microsoft's free WORD viewer
It will allow you to print, copy and read rec'd Word docs.

Several questions:
1) When you say it worked in the past, do you mean on the computer you're
using now?
2) If so, is there anything you've changed, downloaded or installed since
the time this last worked?
3) What kind of error messages are you getting? Or, more generally, what
specifically happens when you try to open a doc?
4) What's the extension on these files? doc? docx?
5) Are you opening from inside works? Or are you doubleclicking on a
document icon and expecting it to open?

I would suspect either the files were corrupted, or they were created with a
version of Office that the viewer is not designed to read.
Are you sure they are regular .doc files?
I have received files that the extensions were wrong, who knows what people
are thinking...

I found that the new version of MS Works will not open *.doc files
correctly. Works never supported all the features of Word, therefore some
documents would not open correctly. The new version of Word uses a new file
extension .docx by default but I have found that it will open old Word
documents *.doc correctly.

Some were doc files that I saved in Works and transferred to a flash drive
and others were sent to me via e-mail. My pastor has always sent me docs for
use in church and I have always been able to open them, but not any more.

DP: After playing around with this, it appears that I cannot open any DOC
files with any of the "open withs." In the past I just right clicked and hit
open and that was that. Now I always have to deal with "open with." The
works error msg: works was unable to open the project you selected. The file
may be corrupted. Yes, the ext. is DOC. About 2 months ago I lost the DVD
player and Toshiba advised that I would have to take the computer down to
"out of the box state" which I did and I think that is when my problem began.
I have no problem with other files, only the DOC files. It may be something
I am doing, don't know. I am not a computer expert.
