Unable to open more than one window at at time

Hi there,
hopefully someone will be able to help. Until recently eveything was
running great with my new computer running Vista, but the last few days, I
have been unable to open more than one window at a time.
When I try to open say a second window, it just hangs until I close the
first one.
Any help resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.
