Unable to read Windows XP upgrade disks.

I have windows 98 second edition and my system (Dell Dimension XPS 266Mhz)
cannot read the windows xp 98 upgrade disks.. It can read windows office 93
disks and all my other disks.. but not the upgrade disk nor another windows
XP OS disk that I got with a Dell Laptop two years ago.. is this a HW issue
with the type of CD that MS is distributing the XP OS on? Or is there some
issue with Windows 98?

"cannot read" - does you mean you cannot Explore the CDs, cannot boot
from the CDs or ??

The CDs that came with another Dell computer might not be bootable if
the boot routine checks the hardware and finds the computer with Win98
does not qualify since it does not have a laptop serial number, etc.

Q

Unable to boot or read.. the CD io led flashes once or flashes continously
but the cd rom drive never spins up.. and this happens with both the Dell
Laptop OS disk and a new MS windows XP upgrade cd (from windows 98 etc..)...
so I don't think it is checking the serial number etc..
