Unable to register update software

I'm having all kinds of problems. I get a message about there being a
problem with my Windows installer. I've walked through the fixes from
Microsoft and none of it helpes. I tried an update to see if that would fix
it and I keep getting the message that the software I need is not registered.
It asked me if I would like to do that and I tell it yes. It goes through a
download and registration process, but gives me the same error when I try to
update again.

Can anyone help?

I'm sorry, I don't understand what information you need.

When I go to Window's update I get the message "Files required to use Window
Update are not longer register or intalled on your computer". I click the
option to "Register or reinstall the files for me now" and it seems to go
through process of doing that, but when I go back into Update it does the
same thing. That's pretty much all there is to it.

I only added the information about a problem with Windows Installer because
I thought they might be related.

Which edition of Windows and what Service Pack level ?
That's what I mean by providing us with pertinent info, Girevik.

It *sounds* like the installed security software is preventing the
proper registration of the required software components in order to be
able to utilize the Windows Update site. So, you can temporarily disable
the installed AV from *all* monitoring of the system and disable any 3rd
party firewall, then Enable the native Windows firewall.

I'm running XP Home on SP3.

I has suspected my AV software as being the culprit in my windows installer
error so removed it. Since that didn't fix my installer error I'm now unable
to install any AV software and don't run any firewall software (my router has
a hardware firewall in it).

I'm considering removing SP3 (if the install issue will let me). Any chance
that might help me out?

1) Are there any error messages when Windows Installer fails ?
2) Which antivirus and Version was installed ?

See if you can install the latest Windows Installer for XP, Windows
Installer 4.5:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Click the Download button next to WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe

*Save* the download, close all open programs and browsers.
Run WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe, restart the system even if you're not
prompted to.
Did that resolve the Installer issue ?

It was McAffee virus scan, installed at part of the SBC Yahoo browser. I'm
not sure what version. I'm not thinking that was realy the cause of my
problem any more.

The installer error message I get is ""The Windows Installer Service could
not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in a safe mode, or
if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support
personnel for assistance."

I've tried a number of things to fix it, including everything here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346. I have tried installing the most
recent installer, but continue to get the same error. I think my favorite
was then I tried to run the windows installer fixup utility; I got that same
message as a result of trying to run it.

I've since tried removing SP3 and running through some of the fixes again
and still get the error.

I believe that if McAfee was actively monitoring the system when SP3 was
installed, then that is the most probable cause of the installer failure.

You are referring to the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, correct ?

Were the registry keys set properly ? Especially the ValueName
'DependOnService' with the Value Data being RpcSs. Without that
setting, the installer service can not run.
And, the ImagePath must point to the location of the installer.

There may be a Permissions issue involved here. That may stem from
McAfee or even malware. Please see this:

"The Windows Installer Service Could Not Be Accessed" error message when
you install a program in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315353

If the Perms are correct, read on ...

The KB article you cite did not recommend unregistering installer,
msiexec, then removing it and related installer files to start with a
clean slate:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886630

See Method 2 to unregister and remove the files.
Now try to install Windows Installer 4.5 once more.

If it fails again, KB315353 suggests doing an in-place upgrade
(reinstallation) of Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341
if all else fails to resolve this issue.

> I've since tried removing SP3 and running through some of the fixes again
> and still get the error.

First, ensure that SP3 has been removed. Go to Start > Run > type in
winver
Click OK or press Enter.
Next to Version 5.1 you'll see the current Service Pack level.
Is it now showing SP2 ? If yes, then you can run the System File Checker
[ sfc /scannow ] : http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
If no joy, then attempt an in-place upgrade (reinstallation).

Finally, if nothing resolves the issue you can contact MS for no-charge
support in getting Security updates installed.
From the latest Security update for XP, which is obviously not
installed on your system:
MS09-001: Vulnerabilities in SMB could allow remote code execution
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958687

" How to obtain help and support for this security update
For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY
in the United States and Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. For more information about how to contact your local
Microsoft subsidiary for support issues with security updates, visit the
