Unable to reinstall security updare

Lost my message and a reply to it.

I have a update (KB896424) which shows up in the add/remove programs but
a check at Microsoft shows it failed.
I tried to reinstall it and add/remove still shows the failed update
(install date remains the same) AND ms still shows it as failed..

Yes, I shut off the firewall and virus.

Must I remove the old install before I reinstall the new update?

I am concerned as when I start a uninstall a warning come up with a list
of progams that may not work if this update is uninstalled.

Uninstall it, reboot, reinstall it (this time with your anti-virus
application temporarily disabled).
