Unable to restore files after Vista re-install

I used Microsoft Backup and Restore center to do a backup of key file
on Vista Ultimate. I used the back up files option not the back u
computer option.

I had to create a small backup on the external HDD in order for Backu
and Restore center to 'see' the backup. That done...

I used the Advanced Restore option, "Files from a backup made on
different computer", selected the drive of the backup HDD, then selec
the backup made before the Vista re-install.

Error: "Windows was not able to load the selcted backup set for th
following reason: The system cannot find the file specified
(0x80070002). Verify that this location is valid and try again, o
considcer choosing a different backup set."

The backup set has several dozen individual incremental backups. I
does see the small backup that I created, but not the original backup.

After extensive searching I see several similar issues with Microsof
Backup and Restore, but no resolution regarding restoring files afte
getting this error after an OS re-install. I have the same computer an
user name. The drive was different, but changing it did not make an
difference.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank
