I have tried to run MS Update this morning and received the following
response when the update website tried to evaluate whether I was running
legitimate Windows.

"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem."

What's up? I have been checking for updates daily without ever having seen
this message before. Is the site down, temporarily??

I have been having the same problem this morning, but only with my 64bit
boxs, the 32bit seem to work fine.

Actually to total message is this.

[Error number: 0x8DDD0004]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. Take the following steps to try solving the problem:
Refresh the page.
In Internet Explorer, delete your Temporary Internet Files by going to the
Tools menu and clicking Internet Options.
Close and then re-open Internet Explorer.

Which comes up after you choose to download and install the ActiveX control.

See if http://www.updatexp.com/0x800B0004.html helps.

Did the ActiveX control install? Are you able to install any ActiveX
control? If not and if that happens after the installation of KB896688
(MS05-052), you could try the following also:

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed the ActiveX problem
for several people, getting this problem after installing KB896688):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

You may have to reboot your machine afterwards.

Bye,
Freudi
