Unable to run update..error 0x8DDD0018

I recently upgraded from Windows 98SE to Windows XP home edition. After
using windows updater to obtain SP2, I am unable to run the program again. I
keep getting the error 0xDDD0018.
Here are the things I have done to try to fix the problem.
1. I tried turning on Automatic Update through services, but recieve this
error: Could not start Automatic updates service on local computer. Error
1058 The service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because
it has no enabled services associated with it.
Thus I tried running: %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe
setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\au.inf
It didn't do anything.
BITS is enabled and running as well as RPC
2. I ran regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll, qmgr.dll, and qmgrprxy.dll
3. Tried to restore from the time I installed Windows XP

As soon as I installed XP my soundcard quit working. It's a CreativeAudioPCI
(ES1371, ES1373)(WDM) so while trying to find a solution to this I
contracted viruses which hopefully I have now gotten rid of. I have never
had such a problem with WIN98 but I guess that's the price to pay for
progress.
Please you if you have any suggestions(for either problem)
they would be greatly appreciated.
