Hi
I am using Internet Explorer 7 to view this forum and to search for
discussions on certain subjects.
But for some reason the "Find" function does not work.
For example, i searched for "Error code" (without the braces) and got

Your query for "microsoft" did not return results.
The following may help you find the results you were looking for:
Check your spelling.
Enter a term or phrase that's less specific.
Try different phrasing.
Try fewer words.

Then I searched for "Microsoft" and "update" (without the braces) and got
the same result.
Even when I navigated away and returned, same thing.

What is going on?
(But please don't tell me I need a newsreader!)

Hi Mike,

At the top of this page there's a box that says Search For: and another that

says In:

Type or paste

0x80240022

or the actuall subject in the Search For: box, and

pick the Group in the drop down menu on the other box.

Then look at the Search Result . ;-)

Thanks Enqel
Maybe when I said "Find" I confused yourself and other people.
What I meant was that I had inserted my words to search for in the "Search
For:" box at the top of the "Discussions in Windows Update" forum, and
selected "Windows Update" in the "In:" box, and then I clicked on the GO
button.
That is how one normally searches here and I have done so frequently.
But, today search cannot find anything.
Any ideas?

And, PA Bear, thanks for the advice about the Google groups, but I couldn't
find the problem i was looking for there either, namely the solution to the
error message I got (Error number: 0x800A01CE) when trying to update Windows
thru their update website
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us

Really weird things happening today!

It is certainly flakey. It seems to work on the second try.

Hmm... this worked on first try:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...xp=&sloc=en-us

(Alt-7 Ctrl-v Enter for your code
- 6 hits
)

> (But please don't tell me I need a newsreader!)

If you're looking for current information that would be
a good way to do it. ; )

E.g. in OE searching for just 800A01CE right now
there are 8 messages found in my cache.
Unlike the web interface and other search tools OE's
Find is based on substring, not full string, so I can search
for instances of both 0x800A01CE and 800A01CE
at the same time. (But that is about the only advantage
there is to that tool IMO. <w>)

Nothing useful in any of these? =>

I suspect you're seeing the affects of a hijackware infection, myself.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

Thanks PA Bear
1. Nothing in the google groups for the error message, I've tried their
suggestions
2. I have downloaded the scan, run it, and it found nothing.
3. The online scan failed to work, and gave me error 0x04601C01. Still
trying to track that down - the forum links supplied in the scan are not
helpful!
Then I'll try it in safe mode, but not sure how to do that "w/networking"
4 Sppybot is run frequently, and has found nothing.
5. I'll try some of the other links in the next few days, and reportback then
Still can't search the forum every time, though.

Thanks very much Robert, but please interpret the following:

2.
what does "OE" stand for?

This assumes that you already have your code
in your ClipBoard. Otherwise, in place of the Ctrl-v
(aka right-click, Paste) in your Search For: input box
type: 0x800A01CE and then press Enter (or click on
the Go button.)

(I hate using my mouse when I don't need to especially
when additional typing may be needed. <w>)

OE is newsgroup shorthand for Outlook Express,
XP's native newsreader. If you want to read this
newsgroup using it, copy and paste the following link
to your Run... dialog (e.g. press Win-R Ctrl-v and Enter
then <w>)

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof....windowsupdate

In order to download the server's entire archive
you would need to uncheck the default option
Get 300 headers at a time
in the Options, Read tab (Alt-T,O,Ctrl-Tab,G)
before entering that newsgroup (or before using the
Tools, Get Next... command after entering it--unless
you only wanted to get 300 headers at a time. <w>)

If you want to post with it too, you should probably
customize the posting identity that the new news account
will have (e.g. via Tools, Accounts...)

I think that I have a complete cache of the current archive.

Here is the oldest message in it which contains 800A01CE

Subject: Cannot instal updates...
Date: Sun, 11 Jan 2009 18:51:01 -0800

The oldest message in it currently is

299240 Tue, 9 Dec 2008 11:10:04 -0500

so you wouldn't have to download the whole archive
if you didn't want to.

> Also, i tried your link, and still got nil answers

Yes. It's still doing it. But again, Alt-7, Enter enabled
it to refresh with the expected results (6 hits).

Good luck

Skip to my Step #3 now. No amount of scanning, be it online or an installed
app (e.g., Spybot), is going to help, trust me.
