unable to see one contact

I just added a contact and the first time it said it was offline but he was
able to see me but I can not send messages to him or viceversa? how do I fix
this? if a 3rd party starts a chat with the 3 of us I can see what the
contact I added is typing buy he can not see when I am typing.....weird
