Unable to send mail when VPN established with my office

When I am connected to my office via a VPN connection and I try to send a
message from Windows Live Mail through my personal mail account, I get a
"Relaying not allowed" error message. I know that the problem is being caused
by my mail client (WLM) trying to send my message out via our Exchange Server
at my office which will not relay messages to another SMTP server. I
experienced this problem with Outlook Express and then later with Windows
Mail but I was able to resolve it by going to Tools | Accounts and then in
the Properties of my personal mail account, selecting the Connection tab and
telling the mail client to "Always connect to this account using" my "Local
Area Network". This however does not resolve the problem in Windows Live
Mail. Can anybody help?

In this respect, WLM should behave much the same as OE and WM.

What port are you using for your personal account's SMTP server
(Advanced tab)?

Assuming that your account isn't explicitly trying to send via the
Exchange server, the only way it would jump in is if your corporate
network were intercepting all traffic on port 25. If your personal mail
service supports an alternate port, such as 587, that may be a
workaround.

The SMTP server setting uses the default port 25. When using OE and WM, I
never had to change that so either I'm missing some other setting (that I
stumbled across previously with the other clients) or there's something
different in WLM and/or Win7.

There have been no changes in the essential settings, since the
POP3 mail protocol standards have remained the same since 1988.

It will help us with troubleshooting if you post the complete error message.
Right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.

Do you have multiple Internet connections on your new PC or did you have
them on your old one?

The issue seems to be with the new PC that WLM is trying to connect to
the SMTP mail server over the VPN connection.

The connection setting you changed tells the program whether to use a
specific dial-up connection or whatever connection may already exist.

Perhaps VPN works differently in Win7 than it does in XP or Vista.

In any case, using port 587 with SMTP authentication may be a
workaround.
