Whenever i attempt to start the service automatic updates in the services
tab, it says "specified service is marked for deletion" and will not start.

Hi smirffster,

Open the registry editor (Start>Run key in regedit then click on OK or hit
ENTER) and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv
In the right-hand pane, look for a value named DeleteFlag and if found,
right-click on that value and select Delete. Next, look for the value named
Start, double-click on it, change the Value data to 2 then click on OK.
Close the registry editor (File>Exit).

Hmm strange. I somehow got automatic updates to work for about an hour, and
wuauserv is now in the registry, but when i try to start it it says service
is marked for deletion still

And i also get the message "Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either
because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with
it" even though the service is set on automatic.

That service being marked for deletion is often caused by trojan
activity.....have a look at this newsgroup thread:

http://tinyurl.com/5h9js

The full URL for the above, if you prefer to copy/paste the entire URL into
a browser window (as it is lengthy and will wrap) is:

Give this a try and see if it resolves the problem:
Go to Start>Run key in services.msc and click on OK or hit ENTER.
Right-click on Automatic Updates then select Properties. Click on the Log On
tab. In the Hardware Profile field (at the bottom), if the Service status is
Disabled for your Hardware Profile (probably is Original Configuration),
click to highlight the Hardware Profile in this field, then click on the
Enable button and then click on Apply. Now, click on the General tab and
click on Start under Service Status.

Hi

If Patti's Hardware Profile tip didn't apply, see if this helps:

1. Click Start.

2. Choose Run.

3. In the Run box, type (or copy/paste from this post)

regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll

(note the space there in the middle)

4. Click OK.

After the regsvr32 command, start regedit.exe
and locate the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv

If you find a DeleteFlag value there, delete the DeleteFlag value.
