unable to start a conversation

I have not been able to use msn since I had to upgrade to Windows Live
Messenger. I can sign in, but when I attempt to start a conversation with one
of my contacts, or if one of my contacts wants to start a conversation with
me I get this error:
"we were unable to start a conversation with_____________. You may want to
try again".

I have already uninstalled and re-installed WLM several times, but I still
have the same problem.

Searching through peoples problems on microsofts help-pages I can see that
lots of people have the same problem as me, but I have not seen any solution
for it yet.

Can anyone help me?

Greetings Tóta,

One thing to try is to upgrade to Windows Live Messenger 8.5:
http://get.live.com/WL/all

Failing that, are you using any sort of third-party software firewall or proxy perhaps?
