I still have not installed WinXP Service Pack 2 and therefore get other high
priority updates for installation. Today I have several such updates for
installation but after several attempts was not able to install them
successfully. With each attempt I get a message that the updates were not
installed successfully. I have never had problems before installing updates
manually. Can someone offer an explanation or solution to my problem.
Thanks.

Hi

See if this helps (disregard the SP2 reference):

Go to
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2

Look for fixdb.bat under "Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from
or write to the database". Download and run it.

If that didn't help:

Look for any specific error messages or error numbers in
windowsupdate.log.

From Start/Run run this exact command:

notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log

See if you can find any clues and/or error massages/numbers there and
post e.g. the last 30 lines of that log here.

After accessing and reading the site you referred me to, I then again
attempted installation in the same manner as before and all the installs
were successful. I did not do anything different between my first attempt and
the latter, but it worked the second time. Nevertheless, I thank you for
your time and advice. Also, the article you referred me to was very
informative, eventhough I probably did not retain it all. I salute you for
sharing your time and knowledge so that others like myself can learn and
become more knowledgeable. Thanks again.
