Again. Last time this happened running WGADiag2.exe and then trying the
install again worked. Not this time. I've also tried running WGA from the
WGA web page. Didn't help.

Another system (my laptop) doesn't even require the WGA "update".
Something's broken w/r WGA on my desktop system -- the one I got the Updater
error on. It's a Dell, with XP Pro installed at the factory.

I guess I could give up updates-available notifications. Or maybe I'll just
get a Mac. I'm tired of this time wasting, to no productive purpose
whatsoever. But meanwhile... any ideas?

He bought the computer at Dell, not exactly famous for installing
pirated OSs. He is sick of doing this instead of USING his computer and
all you can do is send him out for more headaches? Just because you
don't have anything else to do with your computer but configure it
doesn't mean that everyone is like that.

Please explain why someone who bought a computer from Dell would benefit
from WGA. This should be good!

A potential fix has been posted previously in this newsgroup. Here it is
again:

A problem with registry key permissions may cause the installation of
KB905474 to fail.

These permissions can be repaired using Registry Editor as follows:

1. Click Start, and then click Run
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK
3. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Locate the subkey HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck
5. Right-click the subkey and select Permissions..
6. Ensure that groupname Administrators allowed Full Control
permission
7. Ensure that username SYSTEM allowed Full Control permission
8. Repeat steps 4-7 for the subkey
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck.1

If that does not fix your problem, please post the contents of your file

C:\WINDOWS\WgaNotify.log

in a follow-up in this thread

I don't see the relevance of any of this to the Subject post.

Doesn't apply but it would take time to read it instead of using the
computer.

Um, like I said, the OP bought the computer from Dell so there's no need
to test if it's "genuine" or not or are you saying that Dell ships their
computers with pirated OSs?

Not the reason I bought my computer.

And the OP wrote and I quote:"I'm tired of this time wasting, to no
productive purpose whatsoever."
