Unable to turn on Automatic Updates, unable to do manual updates

Today my anti-virus program detected the presence of the W32.Dedler.Worm on
my computer, running Windows XP. I followed the instructions for removing the
worm and when I rebooted after all was done, I found that Automatic Updates
had been turned off. Moreover, I could not turn it back on. When I tried to
do a manual update, I made a connection to the Microsoft site, and it
searched my computer for needed updates, but when I instructed the computer
to install them, I just got an error message, saying it wasn't possible.

Did the worm delete some essential files, and if so, how can I get them back?

I'm having the same problem that started two days ago and have spent over 5
hours on the phone with MSFT techs without resolution. Their next level is to
call me back tonight. I'm only slightly relieved to find out it's not just my
machine.

What is the specific error message you receive?

I should have added that you should read the following from
Microsoft in the interim:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798/

Hi,

Try this:

1. Click Start.

2. Choose Run.

3. In the Run box, type (or copy/paste from this post)

regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll

(note the space there in the middle)

4. Click OK.

Do the same for wuapi.dll, wups.dll and wucltui.dll

After the regsvr32 command, start regedit.exe
and locate the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv

If you find a DeleteFlag value there, delete the DeleteFlag value.

Thanks - sounds similar to what the MSFT tech did with me on the phone last
night and it fixed the problem.
