Unable to Update after Crash

My system had a corrupt registry crash. I have recovered, but my registry
is wacked. I have not recent backups with which to replace it. Now many
programs do not function, and I am unable to update windows.

Your only reliable course of action is to perform a full factory recovery
using the
recovery CD (or floppy, whichever you were given) and start from scratch.
Trying to sort out the mess any other way is a recipe for endless trouble.
